Sculpture: Julie Janvrin: Artist Statement

back

Julie Janvrin was born in 1949. After a career in the theatre, she studied Ceramics at Falmouth College of Art in Cornwall. Drawing from her experiences on the stage, her early work focused on characters, dancers and performers of all kinds, many from the plays of Shakespeare. This body of work was exhibited and sold at various theatres and Galleries including The Chichester Festival Theatre, The  Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford upon Avon, and at The  Capitol Theatre Horsham.

She then chose to focus on the female form in all its abstraction. Influenced by 20th century artists such as Maillol and Giacometti she produces elongated abstracted female nudes.

In addition to these she creates larger scale torsos. By using the ancient method of Raku firing she presents the figures in a  tarnished colour palette of silver, greens and greys.

Julie runs her studio at home in Sussex, is a  member of the Sussex Artists Association and is co-owner of  the Green Tree Gallery.
