Paintings: Caroline Smith: Artist Statement

back

Glimpses of light through trees or the movement of air or water are visual treats that can be captured in the imagination and made into expressive form.

Painting landscapes gives me the opportunity to bring together the many sensations felt in a particular place.

The paintings produced in oils are made to show the directness of this experience.  The marks and build up of paint is left open to show the process by which it was made.

I try to show the energy or atmosphere of the place by exaggerating colour and light and applying  paint with quick movements of the brush.

I have a studio at the Phoenix Gallery in Brighton and regularly exhibit paintings in the Brighton Festival and Lewes Artwave.
