Paintings: Annie Vince: Artist Statement

back

I was born in France, married an Englishman and came to live in England teaching French as a profession. My interest in art started about 17 years ago when a friend, who is a painter, persuaded me to join an art class at an Adult Education Centre and have a go!  I have never looked back, and since then I have been attending different art groups and classes, and a fine art course at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth. Over the years I have learned to paint in most media, but discovered that acrylic and oil suited me best.

About 5 years ago, I joined a private art class and started to focus on abstract painting, first on paper with oil and now on large canvases. I like using vibrant and vivid colours with big strokes, always trying to produce a dramatic atmosphere with lots of movement.

Sometimes I take an idea from one of my photographs by just picking up a line, and then adding colours - the painting then develops naturally. My paintings usually start with colour in mind, which I apply randomly at first with some structured lines. I feel my inspiration comes from within, and as long as I achieve a sense of movement with big brush strokes, I normally arrive at a succesful conclusion.

My work has been exhibited at the Bettles Art Gallery in Ringwood. My painting Waterfall, recently won first prize in the SAA’s international competition in the abstract category.
