Jewellery: Jane Stirzaker Evans
Jane first worked in
porcelain whilst living in Sweden in the late 70's. Its soft texture,
whilst being worked, lends itself to the exploration of space, an old
dance theme, and the way porcelain moves through and surrounds it.
The use of body stains, to
weave colour into the porcelain, is a recent development in Jane's
work, producing intriguing effects. Living by the sea, with all its
creations, also provides inspiration and stimulation for the
individual jewellery pieces, each one of which is signed either with
her initials or two parallel lines. Inspiration also comes from space,
the planets, and the contrast of an almost translucent moon against a
black, velvety sky.
Jane is also intrigued by
an old Chinese glaze
'temmoku' or
'tenmuko'. Depending on the
consistency used, a range of wonderful browns, some with an olive
green hue, or yellow, emerge. Brown with black also can be created.
An activist at heart, the
technical side of Jane's work has been developed through
experimentation, attending courses, workshops and lectures, and
through her own research and learning from fellow ceramic artists. She
has mastered the art of nurturing the porcelain through its fragile
drying out process, and in fettering, to ensure an even,
smooth finish
to her pieces.
