Ceramics: John Evans
After a life-time of collecting ceramics,
John came to using clay as a creative medium in the mid 1990’s. This
evolved into a new career path and, after graduating with a BA (Hons)
from the prestigious Harrow ceramics course in 2005, John established
his studio, first in London, and latterly in Worthing.
John
is a member of the London Potters, Southern Ceramic Group, Craft
Potters Association, and the Sussex Guild. His work featured in
‘Ceramic Review’ in March 2008 and is often described as contemporary,
contemplative and intriguing. In 2009 John was awarded a grant by the
Craft Pottery Trust to further research ‘alternative raku’ techniques.
“My
inspirations are many but, in essence, focus on primitive cultures and
their use of clay without glazes; ‘painting’ with smoke to combine
artistic intent with the random markings of the raku process. I want
the visual experience to be complemented by the burnished surfaces,
often described as ‘just like marble’ and always demanding to be
touched.”
